Bailey’s Story…

Bailey Renee Hill, daughter of Verne (WBFJ Morning Show) and Paula Hill (full-time wife and mom) of Midway, has been homeschooled from kindergarten through 12th grade.  She is a 2014 graduating senior from Hill Academy, graduating with honors.

Bailey will participate in two graduations:
May 24 -  NCHE (North Carolinians for Home Education) statewide graduation at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem
May 17 - Davidson County Community College graduation where she will be recognized for her completion of the Humanities and Social Science PATHWAY through the Career and College Promise program.  *Bailey will be the first the student to complete this pathway.

Homeschooling has allowed Bailey the flexibility to pursue her passion for the performing arts.  She has been involved with Lexington Youth Theater, plays guitar and sings in worship band at Faith Church in Midway, where her family attends, and is a dance instructor/choreographer for Cross Movement Dance Ministry in Tyro.

Bailey has been attending Davidson County Community College in the Career and College Promise program during her junior and senior years.
She will complete a pathway in Humanities and Social Science this May. She will be the first student to complete this pathway.  Bailey is on the Dean’s List at DCCC and in the Scholars of Global Distinction program.  While at DCCC Bailey took a communications class under Sylvia Walters which confirmed her decision to pursue a degree in the field of communications.  Sylvia_Walters@davidsonccc.edu

Media Fast By: Mariah Cathryn

Media Fast

This week my family and I did a media fast.  We could not watch TV, listen to music, watch movies, or get on any media device for seventy-two hours. We started on Monday, January 21st at five p.m. and ended on Thursday, January 24th at five p.m.

The electronic device that I missed the most would probably be my iPod. I found myself thinking about what shows would be on TV. I also missed listening to music when I was getting ready both morning and evening.

My prediction about the media fast was completely true. I thought that I would like the media fast, and I did. But it was a little complicated at first. My family and I got creative and had a lot of fun. This experiment was both easy and hard for me. It was easy because I found other things to do like staining a bird feeder, playing games with my family, and reading a book. The hardest parts were wanting to turn on the TV, text my friends, or check my email. Overall the media fast was not that difficult.

I learned that I don't have to have media to live. I can go on without media if it is necessary. I also learned that time goes by faster when you are consumed with media. We should enjoy our time on earth and not pass it by.  In the future I will not spend so much time on media and just try to enjoy life. YOLO.

History of the Christian Flag...

With all the talk of the Christian flag being taken down at the Veterans Memorial in King on September 17, 2010 after the King City Council received lawsuit threats from the ACLU, do you know the history of the Christian flag?

Here is the story...
The Christian Flag was first conceived on September 26, 1897, at Brighton Chapel on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The superintendent of a Sunday school, Charles C. Overton, was forced to give an impromptu lecture to the gathered students, because the scheduled speaker had failed to arrive for the event. Overton saw a US flag in the front of the chapel and drawing on the US flag for inspiration. He gave a speech asking the students what a flag representing Christianity would look like. Overton thought about his improvised speech for many years afterward. In 1907, he and Ralph Diffendorfer, secretary of the Methodist Young People's Missionary Movement, designed and began promoting the flag.

The symbolism: The Christian flag has a white field, a red ‘Latin’ cross inside a blue square (canton). The red on the cross symbolizes the blood Jesus shed on Calvary, the blue represents the title given to Jesus of King of Kings and the white represents the purity of Jesus.

In the news...

One veteran’s group is making a 'stand' for the Christian flag. Ray Martini, spokesperson for “Rolling Thunder of Winston-Salem”, saying that he and members of Rolling Thunder will stand watch and guard a temporary Christian flag placed at the Veterans Memorial… 24 / 7 until October 23. King City Manager John Cater gave Rolling Thunder permission to place a Christian flag in a temporary stand at the Memorial; as long as someone is present with the flag at all times. The King City Council removed the Christian Flag from the Veterans Memorial after a resident and the ACLU threatened a lawsuit. On Saturday, October 23, Calvary Baptist Church in King is organizing a rally in support of the Christian flag in their parking lot…about a mile and a half from the Veterans memorial. FYI: Rolling Thunder’s mission is to advocate the U.S. government to bring home American prisoners of wars and those still missing in action. www.rollingthunder-nc6.com/

Need a DJ for your next event???

Hey, I'm Verne from the WBFJ Morning Show.

Over the years, people have asked me "Where can I get a trustworthy DJ for my event? Someone who plays 'cool' music...yet a DJ who won't offend those in the crowd (or wear really outdated 70's polyester?"

How about DJ - Verne...from Music, Mics and More!

I have personally been part of creating the 'audible atmosphere' to +100 events over the past 15 years! I play a mix of party standards like the Electric Slide, the Limbo song and the Little Chicken Dance...plus the hits of the 50's, 60' 70's and some 80's. AND I always throw in some of my favorite Christian hits of today.

Call today for a personal quote!
